Implant Insertion Appointment Request

We are delighted to announce that our Nexplanon/implant fitting service is now open to patients in the Dundee area where your GP practice has an agreement with Newfield Medical Group to provide this service. Your own GP practice will be able to advise you whether an agreement is in place and whether you can refer to this service using our online form below. It’s important to note that we cannot provide this service to patients not registered at Newfield if there is no agreement in place between ourselves and your own practice.

What to expect:

Please see video below about what to expect during appointment:

  • Nexplanon is inserted under the skin of your upper arm by a trained medical professional.
  • It prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years.
  • Before implantation, you will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area.
  • Your healthcare provider will then use a special applicator that will guide Nexplanon under the skin of your arm.
  • The insertion process only takes a few minutes.
  • After the implant is inserted, your arm will be covered with a bandage. Remove the top bandage after 24 hours, but leave the smaller bandage on for 3 to 5 days.
  • To avoid infection, proper sterile methods must be used during the insertion of the implant, such as the use of hand hygiene, sterile gloves, and correct skin disinfection.

What to expect after fitting:

The implant may cause side effects for some people, but they usually go away after a few months.

The most common side effect is spotting especially in the first 6-12 months.

For most people, the implant makes their periods way lighter and in some cases can cause periods to stop (this is completely safe).

Other possible side effects that aren’t as common include:

  • Headaches
  • Breast pain
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pain or bruising on your arm where the implant was inserted
  • An infection where the implant was inserted

    Result of last smear:

Any Sexually Transmitted Infections in the past eg chlamydia, gonorrhoea?

Have you had a new sexual partner in the last 3 months?
